Anorexia Nervosa
Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is characterized by extreme food restriction with or without episodes of binging and/or purging. Technically, a diagnosis of AN requires amenorrhea and a weight that is <85% of ideal body weight or BMI <17.5 for females and <19 for males. However, do not let these standards be limiting. Just because she is still having a period or she/has not lost enough weight (yet) to meet the criteria does not mean that they are at less risk for serious consequences or less in need of immediate treatment.
Diagnostic Criteria (according to the DSM-5):
Subtypes:
- Persistent restriction of energy intake leading to significantly low body weight (in context of what is minimally expected for age, sex, developmental trajectory, and physical health) .
- Either an intense fear of gaining weight or of becoming fat, or persistent behavior that interferes with weight gain (even though significantly low weight).
- Disturbance in the way one's body weight or shape is experienced, undue influence of body shape and weight on self-evaluation, or persistent lack of recognition of the seriousness of the current low body weight.
Subtypes:
- Restricting type
- Binge-eating/purging type
